Forestry

The UK has only 12% of land devoted to forestry, compared with 25-80% elsewhere in Europe. More could enhance the environment and improve the national economy.

77% of the wood used by the European paper and board industry comes from Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) monitored countries (see www.cepi.org) with the remaining 23% coming from outside the CEPI area, mainly Russia and the Baltic countries.

Increased afforestation benefits the world's atmosphere by absorbing CO2 which is 'fixed' during the life of the tree.

Much of the wood used to make pulp for papermaking comes from forest thinnings and waste products from saw mills. The bulk of the tree goes to other commercial applications such as construction and furniture making.

More trees are planted than are harvested, thus ensuring forest growth. 

Pressures on natural forests are reduced by commercial plantations and by recycling.

The industry is endeavouring to ensure that the forest sustains not just timber yield, but also other dependent species.
