NVQs
Background
The corrugated packaging industry has offered qualifications for its
operations in fibreboard manufacture and fibreboard conversion
at Level 2 since 1992. New standards were developed in 2001 and
implemented from January 2002 at Levels 2 and 3 in fibreboard manufacture
and conversion. The reason for the change has been to provide greater
opportunity for operators to gain recognition for their skills
and competence.

What
are the qualifications?
The qualifications are intended for operators, both new and experienced, who
make or convert solid and corrugated fibreboard. Such operators may work in
integrated board making or sheet plants.
The
qualifications are awarded by the Fibreboard Awarding Body (FAB) and
have the approval of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)
and the Scottish Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (SQCA).
There
are two qualifications offered; Fibreboard Manufacture and Fibreboard
Conversion. Each qualification has its own pathways to achievement.
To achieve a qualification candidates are assessed at their normal
place of work, observed by a trained assessor. In addition candidates
also have to undertake some personal activities to complete their portfolio.
How
is the scheme administered?
| > |
Companies
will first register an interest with the FAB. |
| > |
The
company will then apply to the FAB to become an Approved Centre
for the Scheme. |
| > |
An
Internal Verifier and Assessor(s) will be identified and trained
to national standards. |
| > |
When
a candidate shows interest in taking an NVQ the Internal Verifier
completes a CN1 registration form for them and sends it to the
Fibreboard Awarding Body. The Units chosen will be indicated on
the CN1 form. |
| > |
For
candidates to acquire a Level 3 qualification they must prove competency
in two mandatory common units; one optional technical unit; one
mandatory technical unit and one general optional unit (5 units
in total). |
| > |
For
candidates to acquire a Level 2 qualification they must prove competency
in two mandatory common units; one mandatory technical unit, and
then either one or two optional technical units depending on which
route is chosen - manufacture or conversion (4 or 5 units in total). |
| > |
The
FAB register the candidate and give them a unique ID number. A
portfolio is sent to the candidate. During the candidate's registration
period there will be external audits conducted by the External
Verifier twice a year to monitor the progress of the candidates. |
| > |
When
the candidate has completed all Assessments the Internal Verifier
signs the Candidate Tracking Record and returns this to the FAB.
The FAB awards the candidate an NVQ certificate. |
